Meet Leo- a very special boy

UPDATE: 6-1-08

Thanks to so many generous people, we were able to meet our fundraising goal. Leo's surgery, all tests, ultrasounds and medications are paid in full. Leo had his surgery on Wednesday, May 28th. He came home the next day. His foster mom says that he is doing wonderfully.
As you can see from the picture, he was shaved extensively but the dressing is just around his neck. The pressure gradient in his heart before surgery was 200, after surgery it was 80 which is still a little high but the surgeon said that the number would continue to go down as Leo recovers. He said that the surgery went just as planned. Leo should make a full recovery and go on to live a normal life. He has to have a third ultrasound in 3 months, he is on beta blocker medication until that time to keep his heart rate slow. If everything looks good at that ultrasound , he can come off of the medication.

Leo and River City Chihuahua Rescue would like to thank the following people for making all of this possible:

Susan Degonia, Arcadia, MO
John and Eileen Happold, St. Louis, MO

DONATIONS NEEDED!

My name is Leo. I have one blue eye, one gray eye and a pink bed that I love. I also have Pulmonic Stenosis. This is a serious heart condition where my heart is unable to pump adequate blood supply to my lungs. I have a bad heart murmur and I get worn out very easily. There is a surgery in which a doctor can open up the valve in my heart that is constricting blood flow. The surgery is very expensive ($3000!!) and River City Rescue needs all the help they can get to pay for it. This is the only way I’ll live longer than 6 more months. I was born on January 30, 2008, so I’m just a puppy but I got a bad break. If you can help in any way, it would mean the world to me and to all of the people who love me!

Thank you for your help!

Love, LEO

*Leo's surgery is scheduled for May 27th. We have raised nearly $2000 toward the bill. We are still hoping to raise more but if we fall short of our goal, the surgery happens anyway, that's why we have credit cards, right? Leo is well loved and we want to see him have the life that he deserves so we are committed to seeing this through. To the many kind people who have sent in donations, thank you so very much. Please come back to this website to see updates on Leo's surgery and his progress. They will be posted regularly, right here.

If you are unable to make a monetary donation, we are now collecting used ink cartidges and unwanted cell phones. We will have a receptacle at our adoption events. We receive a small amount for each one that will help our dogs. We are grateful for any and all donations to our organization. Every little bit helps!

Who We Are

In August, 2006, we branched off from a long association with Chihuahua Rescue and Transport in order to have a more local focus. We love CRT and are modeling ourselves after the high standards of that wonderful organization. You may have noticed that we have also branched out from chihuahuas. As we were doing shelter pulls, it became harder and harder to pull chihuahuas for rescue and leave behind other small breed dogs that we knew were highly adoptable. So we started taking them also. Chihuahuas are first in our hearts but we have been very successful in finding wonderful homes for doxies, miniature pinschers and various terriers. If we have the means, the desire and the drive to rescue them as well, how could we not? I guess we should start calling ourselves River City Canine Rescue.

River City Chihuahua Rescue (RCCR) is a non-profit, voluntary organization. We have no paid employees. We are a local, internet-based organization dedicated to the rescue, medical care and adoption of stray and homeless small breed dogs in need. We help control the growing overpopulation by spaying and neutering all dogs in our care. We provide all necessary veterinary treatment and place them in foster homes until they are adopted into forever homes. Whenever possible, RCCR also raises public awareness regarding the abuse and neglect of small breed dogs as well as overpopulation caused by not spaying and neutering.

Adopting a dog from RCCR - The Process

All of our dogs are in fostered in our homes. They are fed premium dog food, temperament tested, altered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, on monthly heartworm preventive, and fecal tested prior to adoption.

RCCR does not adopt out dogs on a first come, first serve basis. Because we want this to be a permanent adoption, wewill place the dog in the home best suited for him/her. We can not hold dogs for homes that are not ready to adopt yet or have not yet been approved.

RCCR is 100% spay/neuter prior to adoption. We do NOT make exceptions so please do not ask. If we have puppies available, they will not be available to go to an adoptive home until they are spayed or neutered.

Here's what you need to do...

  • We check your personal and vet references that are given on your online adoption application

  • A home visit is scheduled for your family. A home visit involves a rescue volunteer coming to your home and visiting with you. All family members and pets must be present at the time of the visit. If you refuse a home visit, your application will be declined.

  • Your information is submitted to the coordinator, foster home and Board of Directors for a decision. Based upon your application, home visit, and references the Board of Directors will either approve or decline your application for adoption.

  • If you are approved, we will require you to sign an adoption contract and pay an adoption fee. Please see our application for the adoption fee schedule.

Interested in Volunteering with RCCR?

We would love to have your help! We need volunteers to help foster, transport, conduct home visits, help with fund-raising, contact shelters, and much, much more. Every little bit helps! Please complete the volunteer application to tell us about yourself and your interests
